Plan area: Infrastructure and Environment

5 Long-Term

Mission & Commitment

The Department of Transportation (DOT) manages NYC's surface transportation network including streets, sidewalks, bridges, and traffic signals. Historical transportation planning and infrastructure decisions have disproportionately harmed communities of color through highway construction that destroyed neighborhoods and chronic underinvestment. DOT's equity goals focus on street safety improvements in high-injury networks concentrated in low-income communities of color, improving transit access, and building a more diverse workforce.
