Mission & Commitment

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) manages the collection and disposal of solid waste, recycling, and street cleaning. Communities of color have historically faced disparities in sanitation service quality and the siting of waste facilities. NYCHA committed to over 100 new waste yards at 83 developments and nearly 1,200 interior compactors at 92 developments, targeted for completion by end of 2028. DSNY's equity goals address these disparities and build a more diverse and equitable workforce.
